Welcome! I’m pleased to bring together my skills and experiences to offer calming, effective college counseling, essay coaching, and medical school advising to you and your family. I believe everyone has their own path to a successful, fulfilling life. I’m honored to help your child find their path and start out on it successfully.

"Working with Ilene was a breath of fresh air amid the application madness. Her knowledge and understanding made the process smoother for my daughter's applications."

Veronika Haber, Parent, CT

Education

I majored in psychology at Amherst College and have a Master’s degree in Education from Tufts University. Later, I became certified as a yoga therapist by the International Association of Yoga Therapists and earned a certificate in Independent Educational Consulting from the University of California at Irvine. After launching my practice, I did months of training specifically in medical school advising. Together, I have the know-how and temperament to guide students and aspiring physicians through the application process, calmly, patiently, and successfully.

Areas of Expertise

Writing and Editing

I started my career as an editor at Scholastic, Inc. Then followed a long career as a freelance writer and editor for educators and non-profits and am the co-author of two books: Yoga and Mindfulness for Young Children with Maureen Heil [Redleaf Press, 2019]), and The Yoga Life: Applying Yoga Therapy to All Areas of Your Life with Robert Butera, PhD, and Jennifer Hilbert [Llewelyn Worldwide, 2021]).

Medical School Advising

Here’s where my writing and editing background really takes off. Acceptance into medical school requires dozens of essays or more. I can help you tell your story so your application shines. And there’s more. Applying to medical school successfully requires strategy and know-how. I’ve been trained by the foremost private medical school advisors in the country, and I regularly attend meetings and conferences to keep up with the latest advice.

Stress Management

Applying to college is stressful. Applying to medical school is stressful. To help, I approach the process using the many tools that I’ve learned through more than 1,000 hours of training in stress management techniques, including movement, breathwork, and mindfulness. I’ll teach skills that can be used to manage stressful situations now and for years to come.

Personal Experience

I’ve been there. I started as an educational consultant by guiding my own three daughters through the college application process, and later graduate school. We’ve dealt with our share of challenges in our house, so I know what it’s like to look for educational experiences while keeping unique needs and priorities in mind. Since then, I’ve helped students with a variety of learning and mental health challenges apply to college. I’m also married to a physician, an MD-PhD practicing at an Ivy League university. I know the intelligence, compassion, and dedication required to be a successful doctor. I’m thrilled to help aspiring doctors begin their medical journey.
